A lot of what is "polite" comes down to how we view politeness around the world. While a lot of the countries like Latin America, South East Asia, Italy etc practice positive politeness which is about including each other, solidarity, being liked etc, the rest of the world like Japan, Scandinavia, Germany etc practice negative politeness where it’s all about giving space and not intruding.
